In loving memory of a Chief

from the November 2005 Star Beacon

by Claudia Blue Corn

Al Butler, also known as Chief White Buffalo of the Long Hair Clan, Cherokee Nation, was a great man and a hero to many, especially in the past 10 years. Born July 29, 1927, he made his transition on Sept. 2, 2005, at the age of 78.
He did enormous kind deeds and made a difference to thousands of people who will never know him. He set up housing projects, massive food transport to poverty-stricken tribal areas, and provided used computers for struggling high school students, giving them a chance for future employment. Amazingly, he did the majority of his good deeds at a tiny table, with a telephone. He was tenacious, but very patient.
He would counsel movie stars and brilliant scientists as well as the common people with a slow wisdom that was his trademark. Many times he would not comment at all because there was no need. Some just wanted a wise listener, and he was that good choice.
He never complained about his ailments, even his severe osteoporosis, impaired lung capacity and blindness. He had a zest for life and a vitality that belied his age. He believed that those complaining of depression should go outdoors and enjoy Nature’s beauty. Al showed gratitude for every gesture of kindness. He showed respect to all creatures and people, especially the down-trodden.
Al had been a professional musician, a radio announcer, a scientific researcher of many things, an herbalist, and even a founding member of Tandy Leather Co. in Fort Worth, Texas. He cooked on a solar oven and made cowboy coffee on an open fire with great flair. To say that he was brilliant is an understatement. He accomplished wonderful things in his lifetime.
Mr. Albert Walter Butler was a TRUE Chief to many, many admirers. We miss him greatly and wish him peace forever. He has deservedly walked on to a place of great beauty.
We love you, Chief White Buffalo!

                                                         Sincerely,
                                                         Claudia Blue Corn, faithful friend
                                                         Cottonwood, Arizona
