CROP CIRCLES IN
IDAHO FARM FIELD

Was it aliens or a prank? Unusual crop circles have appeared in a farm field in Teton, Idaho. The owners of the field say they have no idea how the circles got there over the weekend of Aug. 10-11. Davina Ryszka of Delta, Colo., sent in a report off the Web site in which witnesses made the following comments:

From Bryon Parker, field owner: "We first thought somebody was playing a prank, but too perfect a circle and too perfect a pattern."

From Brenna Parker, the farmerís daughter: "My Uncle Lewis was irrigating Saturday morning and came up over the hill and seen the crop circles."

The family says they have had thousands of people drive by to look at the crop circles. One specific person told them she was a scientist, who had just happened to drive by. She said she studied (crop circles) three years in England. She told the family the crop circles were real, because they were "perfect" patterns. "The way they were pushed," Brenna said, "with no damage to the crop, just laying down" itís not trashed out -- no kinks -- just some things she pointed out that say it was not manmade."

The lady scientist told the family she thought "it would probably be back," although she didnít say when, but it would probably be back in the same place.

Bryon said he doesnít believe the circles were necessarily manmade, but he said if the alleged aliens who made the circles do come back, "maybe weíd be looking forward to it -- even charge admission." His daughters are selling pictures of the circle.

Many reported seeing lights in the sky over the weekend.

WHAT IíM UP TO

Some readers have wondered what kind of "career change" Iíve made in the last month or so. I was reluctant to mention it beforehand, only because I wasnít sure if it was going to pan out.

In July I left my job of 13+ years at High Country News, the "paper for people who care about the West," to go into business for myself. On Aug. 7 Earth Star "gave birth" to a new publication, The Cochetopa Weekly Shopper, out of Monte Vista, Colo. The paper comes out every Wednesday and is distributed free throughout the San Luis Valley.

I have discovered that it takes a lot of courage and a lot of hard work to start a new business and to go into an area where you are definitely the "new kid" on the block! But it has been a real adventure, so far, and the hope is that we can make a real difference for the people in southern Colorado -- and in this "mysterious valley," where cattle mutilations and UFO sightings have made national headlines.

I would not dream of giving up The Star Beacon, even though I had to sacrifice the Love and Light Conference in 2002. Youíll understand, I hope, if your issue happens to be a little late on account of its "baby sister" publication.
