The Light of the World

The holiday season is once again upon us. It is a time of joy, love and peace
on Earth. Unfortunately, due to consumerism, it is also a time of stress and
debt. With marketing campaigns, gift giving and Santa Claus, it is very easy
to lose site of the real meaning of Christmas.
It is, of course, the
celebration of the birth of one of the greatest masters to have ever walked
the earth. Celebrated shortly after the Winter Solstice, when we experience
the longest hours of darkness, Christmas is also a reminder and celebration of
the light. Jesus (Jeshua) is the Light of the world.
So are we! Within each
and every one of us is the divine light. We need only quicken and awaken the
Christ consciousness within us. Jeshua tried to tell us this in many of his
teachings. He spoke of Oneness — “What so ever you do to the least of my
brothers, you do unto me.” He also tried, unsuccessfully, to tell us that he
was no different than anyone else! To paraphrase a quote from the Bible — “All
these things I have done, so shall you do, and more.”
We can call forth the
Christ within us by trying to come from love and compassion in all that we do.
In every situation, stop and ask yourself “What would love do?” Jeshua is our
elder brother and came to Earth to show us how to live and love through his
example.
One of the symbolic
traditions that I love about Christmas is the colored lights. Metaphysically,
the tree (in Genesis) represents the connecting link between Heaven and Earth.
Therefore, the tradition of the Christmas tree is very appropriate. With all
the beautiful lights piercing the darkness, so can the light within our souls
pierce the negativity and hatred on Earth.
I had a very profound
experience several years ago while I was attending a Christmas Eve candlelight
service. As people exited the sanctuary holding a lit candle and singing
Silent Night, a wave of unity swept over me. I saw the candlelight as the
light of everyone’s soul. At that moment I knew we were all One. We were one
with each other and one with God.
This holiday season, stop
for just a moment to see the divine light within your family members, friends,
co-workers, and even the people on the street. Remember that Christ never left
us. He lives in each and every one of us. Have a very Blessed and Merry
Christmas.
