Nicole Singleton comes home to Forks, Washington after graduation with a teaching degree from Oregon State.

Heartbroken over her cheating fiance, she faces a more devastating challenge when a car accident results in the death of all three of her family members. For years she has wondered about her mother, who left 15 years ago, following a divorce. After Nicole sells the house, she moves to Marietta, Ohio, where she begins to search for her mother.

Twice, Nicole has dreamed about the mysterious man with blond hair, remarkable blue eyes and a mustache. She is startled to encounter him one day in a park next to the Ohio River.

She is mysterious drawn to the small town of Matamoras, upriver from Marietta, after an elderly friend in Forks tells her that Carolyn was living in that city before she stopped corresponding. Nicole sets out to find her mother, yet no one in the town upriver appears to know her. But every time she returns to the town, she picks up more clues.

Encounters with the mysterious blond man lead her into a possible new relationship while another devastating occurrence drives her to decide whether she should return to Forks, or start a new life in Marietta.
