Meditation Revelation

          I would love to be able to say that I meditate on a daily basis, but to be truthful, that has not been the case. I have made many attempts to establish a regular meditation practice. I have tried many different methods of meditation. With all of them, I would get frustrated and quit. For years my guides had been constantly suggesting that I meditate. If they had physical necks, I think I would have strangled them!
          No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t seem to get the hang of it. My mind would constantly wander. Sometimes it would be several minutes before I would realize that I was thinking about other things. I would try to get back on track, only to drift off again to more useless mind chatter. I would think to myself, “Well, I blew it again! It’s hopeless! I just can’t do this right!”
          Many times, while trying to meditate, my concentration would get interrupted by an annoying itch. I would get so uncomfortable that I would only be concentrating on how miserable I was. In desperation, I would scratch.
          The next thing I knew, I would have two more itches! Sometimes I would get overwhelming feelings of restlessness. It would be so bad that I would have to stop the meditation, get up and move around. Occasionally my inner peace would be jolted away by a car alarm going off or the neighbors would start fighting. At times I would even fall asleep!
          It sounds hopeless, doesn’t it? That is what I thought, too. My guides assured me that it wasn’t hopeless. They told me that once I met my soul mate, we would start meditating together and that it would all fall into place. As usual, they were right. My boyfriend introduced me to a wonderful CD, titled “Meditation For Beginners” by Jack Kornfield. Every issue that I just mentioned in the paragraph above was addressed, and more!
          I discovered that I was not a total failure at meditation after all! In fact, what I was experiencing was normal! What a relief to learn that I wasn’t doing anything wrong. I learned valuable techniques for handling those pesky thoughts. When a thought or feeling comes, it is OK.           Acknowledge the thought or feeling and give it a simple label such as “thinking”, “planning”, “sleepy”, or “restless”. Once they are acknowledged, you can gently let them go and return back to your breathing focus. You can even include the car alarm and any other disruptive noise into your meditation. Allow everything that comes up.
          Sit in a comfortable position with your back straight. Close your eyes and just focus on the breath. Concentrate on the sensations of breathing and how your body feels. Notice the coolness as the breath enters the nostrils. Sense the rhythm as your chest rises and falls. When your mind wanders, acknowledge it, release it, and return back to the breath. It doesn’t matter if you have been thinking for five minutes or five seconds before you take notice of it. What is important is that you return your focus back to the breath. This trains your mind to stay in the moment.
          There are many benefits to meditation. It is a wonderful way to connect with spirit and your higher self. It helps to raise your consciousness and vibration, to open your heart, and trains the mind to stay focused on the present moment. Meditation also instills feelings of peacefulness and tranquility, which helps to relieve the stresses of daily living. It also helps to rejuvenate the body, mind and spirit.
          I wrote this article because I wondered if others had also experienced the same frustrations that I did. Hopefully, it will inspire you to start a regular meditation practice as well. Just remember that it is “all good.”
