Eating to live vs. living to eat

from the October 2004 Star Beacon

Commentary by Marty Ulrich

Since the dawn of humankind we have always had the problem of constantly battling to gather food. Through the ages we evolved and we learned more efficient and easier ways to obtain food. I don’t think Nostradamus saw obesity as being an issue in the future world.

Well, the future is now and the tables have turned and hardly any of us in America have ever had to fight or work extremely hard to get food. We just eat whenever our brain, or our clock tells us to eat and pay no attention to how much you serve, for your body will tell you when to stop – but will you listen?

Basically the “famine” we have in our world today is malnourishment. People fill themselves up with crap. McDonalds, KFC, Carls Junior’s 1-lb. burger — the food they ingest often takes more energy to digest than is obtained from the food itself.

So to give this up, you must change your patterns of thought. Eating is so subconscious in our lives that we don’t even think about why we eat or what happens to the food after we swallow it. As far as most of us are concerned, we’ll just deal with it 14 hours later.

But if we can get off that pattern, we can change. We need to get over the whole eat-for-enjoyment crap. If you eat less, your body will have more energy because it’s not constantly producing enzymes and gastric juices for digestion. And there really are better things to do than sit around and snack.

Find a simple diet that includes what you need every day and stick to it. The body doesn’t need a new platter sampler every day. The body adjusts to foods you consume every day and it knows what time you usually eat them, so for optimum health, eat the same thing every day like I do. And if you think that it is boring to eat the same thing every day, then you are definitely focusing way too much attention on food to begin with.
