The Meaning of It All

from the March 2008 Star Beacon

By Ann Ulrich Miller

Getting Over It

Recently my feelings were hurt. By whom and for what isn’t important. Suffice it to say I was insulted because I’d been “left out” and not recognized for an accomplishment I’d put much time and effort into, to help promote a friend.
One of the Four Agreements from Don Miguel Ruiz is “Don’t take anything personally.” I tried not to, really I did. I kept trying to think of excuses for why these people had rebuffed me. All I could dwell on was the negative side. “They hated my work,” “They are jealous of me,” and so on.
I discovered the reason when I finally consulted my friend, who convinced me it was not her idea that I be left out. The other party had feared my work would adversely affect her own. By not recognizing my contribution, the chances of their success might increase.
Although I didn’t accept this as a satisfactory answer, I decided the best thing to do was let it go. Why make an issue of it?
Why mention it now, even?
My ego wouldn’t allow it. I didn’t want to live my life groveling in self-pity, always wondering why I’d been wronged.
I had taken this personally, but how could I be personally wronged by a person who doesn’t know me and has never met me?
When we take things personally, it only shows how self-centered we are. When somebody snaps at you, it has nothing to do with you, it’s all about them. It took me a while to realize that what happened was not my fault.
No sense dwelling on it then!
I’m over it now. I’ll admit, it took me a while, but I’ve recognized that it’s not worth my time to stew over someone else’s insecurity.
Think what kind of a world we could have if everyone simply let go of the silly things in life that they believe make them victims.
I’m no victim. Neither are you.
